The Nature of Sound: A Vibration in a Medium
Sound is a mechanical wave, a disturbance that propagates through a material medium—be it air, water, steel, or even a brick wall. This fundamental definition immediately distinguishes sound from light, which is an electromagnetic wave capable of traveling through a vacuum. The genesis of any sound is a vibrating object. A guitar string oscillates back and forth, a loudspeaker cone pulses rapidly, and vocal cords modulate the flow of air from the lungs. This vibration causes the molecules of the surrounding medium to oscillate. In air, for instance, a vibrating speaker cone pushes against adjacent air molecules, compressing them. These molecules then spring back, colliding with their neighbors and transferring the energy of the vibration, creating a region of compression. As they spring back, they leave a region of lower pressure, or rarefaction, behind them. This pattern of alternating high-pressure (compression) and low-pressure (rarefaction) zones moving outward from the source constitutes a longitudinal wave. In a longitudinal wave, the particles of the medium oscillate parallel to the direction of the wave’s energy transport. This is in contrast to transverse waves, like those on a string, where the particles move perpendicular to the wave direction.
The Core Properties: Frequency, Wavelength, and Amplitude
The physical characteristics of a sound wave are defined by three fundamental properties: frequency, wavelength, and amplitude. These parameters determine the pitch, timbre, and loudness we perceive.
Frequency (f) is measured in Hertz (Hz) and represents the number of complete wave cycles (compression plus rarefaction) that pass a fixed point per second. A wave with a frequency of 100 Hz completes 100 full oscillations every second. The human auditory system interprets frequency as pitch. High-frequency sounds, like a bird’s chirp or a screeching whistle, are perceived as high-pitched. Low-frequency sounds, like the rumble of thunder or a bass guitar, are perceived as low-pitched. The standard range of human hearing is typically cited as 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz), though this upper limit decreases significantly with age and noise exposure. Sounds below 20 Hz are classified as infrasound, while those above 20 kHz are ultrasound.
Wavelength (λ) is the physical distance between two successive, identical points on a wave, such as from one compression peak to the next. It is inversely proportional to frequency, a relationship governed by the wave’s speed. The formula v = fλ, where ‘v’ is the wave speed, is central to wave physics. In a given medium at a constant temperature, the speed of sound is fixed. Therefore, a high-frequency sound must have a short wavelength, and a low-frequency sound must have a long wavelength. For example, in air at room temperature, a 100 Hz sound wave has a wavelength of about 3.4 meters, while a 10,000 Hz wave has a wavelength of just 3.4 centimeters.
Amplitude describes the magnitude of the pressure change within the wave. It is the maximum displacement of a particle in the medium from its position of rest. In a sound wave, a larger amplitude corresponds to a greater difference between the pressure in a compression and the pressure in a rarefaction. Perceptually, amplitude is the primary determinant of loudness. A more vigorously vibrating object, like a drum struck with greater force, creates a sound wave with higher amplitude, which we hear as a louder sound. The energy carried by a sound wave is proportional to the square of its amplitude. Doubling the amplitude of a wave quadruples the amount of energy it transmits.
The Speed of Sound: More Than Just a Constant
The speed of sound is not a universal constant; it depends critically on the properties of the medium through which it travels. The primary factors are the medium’s density and its elasticity, or more precisely, its bulk modulus, which is a measure of how resistant a substance is to compression.
In general, sound travels fastest in solids, slower in liquids, and slowest in gases. This is because the atoms or molecules in solids are packed tightly together and bound by strong intermolecular forces, allowing for very efficient and rapid transfer of vibrational energy. In gases, the molecules are far apart and interact less frequently, leading to a slower propagation speed. For example, the speed of sound in air at 20°C is approximately 343 meters per second (m/s), in freshwater it is about 1,480 m/s, and in steel, it can exceed 5,000 m/s.
Temperature also has a significant effect, particularly in gases. As a gas heats up, its molecules move faster. This increased kinetic energy allows the molecules to transfer the vibrational disturbance more quickly. In air, the speed of sound increases by about 0.6 m/s for every degree Celsius increase in temperature. Humidity has a minor effect, with sound traveling slightly faster in more humid air because the less dense water molecules displace the denser nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air.

Sound waves obey the same fundamental wave principles as light or water waves. When a sound wave encounters a boundary, several things can happen.
Reflection occurs when a sound wave strikes a large, hard surface and bounces back. This is the principle behind an echo. The angle at which the wave approaches the surface (angle of incidence) equals the angle at which it reflects (angle of reflection). The design of concert halls and auditoriums must carefully manage reflections to avoid problematic echoes while using early reflections to enhance the sense of spaciousness and loudness, a field known as architectural acoustics. Refraction is the bending of a sound wave as it passes from one medium into another where its speed is different. This is commonly observed in the atmosphere. On a cool night, the air near the ground is colder than the air above. Since sound travels slower in colder air, sound waves can bend upward, making it difficult to hear distant sounds. Conversely, on a sunny day, warmer air near the ground can cause sound waves to bend downward, allowing sound to travel farther.
Interference is a quintessential wave phenomenon where two or more sound waves superimpose to form a resultant wave of greater, lower, or the same amplitude. Constructive interference happens when the compressions of two waves align, resulting in a wave with a higher amplitude and a louder sound. Destructive interference occurs when the compression of one wave aligns with the rarefaction of another, canceling each other out and resulting in a wave of lower amplitude or even silence. This principle is used in noise-canceling headphones, which generate a sound wave that is the exact inverse (anti-phase) of the ambient noise, leading to destructive interference and a reduction in perceived sound.
The Doppler Effect: A Shift in Frequency
The Doppler Effect is the perceived change in frequency of a sound wave due to the relative motion between the source of the sound and the observer. When a source of sound moves toward an observer, each successive wave crest is emitted from a position closer to the observer than the previous crest. This has the effect of shortening the wavelength, which corresponds to a higher frequency, and thus a higher-pitched sound. Conversely, when the source moves away, each wave crest is emitted from a farther position, stretching the wavelength, lowering the frequency, and producing a lower-pitched sound. A common example is the sound of a passing siren: as the emergency vehicle approaches, the pitch is high; the moment it passes, the pitch drops noticeably. The same effect occurs if the observer is moving relative to a stationary source. The Doppler Effect has profound applications beyond everyday experience, most famously in astronomy, where the “redshift” of light from distant galaxies indicates they are moving away from us.
Resonance and Standing Waves
Resonance is a phenomenon that occurs when a vibrating system or external force drives another system to oscillate with greater amplitude at a specific preferential frequency. This frequency is known as the system’s natural or resonant frequency. Every object has resonant frequencies determined by its size, shape, and material. A classic example is an opera singer shattering a wine glass by singing a precise note that matches the glass’s resonant frequency, causing it to vibrate with such amplitude that it fractures. In musical instruments, resonance is fundamental. The body of an acoustic guitar is designed to resonate sympathetically with the vibrations of the strings, amplifying the sound and enriching its tone.
When a wave is confined within a space, like the air column inside a flute or the string fixed at both ends on a guitar, it can create a standing wave. This is a wave pattern that results from the interference of two waves of identical frequency and amplitude traveling in opposite directions. The pattern appears to be standing still, with points of no vibration called nodes and points of maximum vibration called antinodes. The specific frequencies at which standing waves form are called harmonics. The lowest frequency is the fundamental frequency, and higher multiples of that frequency are overtones. The unique combination of the fundamental and its overtones is what gives each musical instrument its distinctive timbre or tone color, allowing us to distinguish a piano from a violin even when they are playing the same note.
The Decibel Scale: Measuring Sound Intensity
The loudness of a sound is related to its intensity, which is a measure of the power carried by the wave per unit area, measured in Watts per square meter (W/m²). The range of sound intensities detectable by the human ear is astronomically large. The threshold of hearing is about 1 x 10^-12 W/m², while the threshold of pain is around 1 W/m²—a factor of one trillion. To handle this vast range, the logarithmic decibel (dB) scale is used.
The sound intensity level (β) in decibels is defined as β = 10 log₁₀(I / I₀), where I is the sound intensity and I₀ is the reference intensity, typically the threshold of hearing (10^-12 W/m²). On this scale, the threshold of hearing is 0 dB. A whisper is about 30 dB, normal conversation is around 60 dB, a lawnmower might be 90 dB, and a jet engine at close range can be 140 dB. Crucially, the scale is logarithmic. An increase of 10 dB represents a tenfold increase in intensity. Therefore, a 90 dB sound is 1,000,000,000 (10^9) times more intense than a 0 dB sound, not 90 times more intense. A 3 dB increase represents a doubling of the sound intensity. Prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 dB can cause permanent hearing damage, highlighting the importance of this logarithmic scale in industrial and environmental health and safety.

The journey of a sound wave from its source to our brain is a remarkable translation of physical energy into perceptual experience. The outer ear funnels sound waves down the ear canal to the eardrum (tympanic membrane), causing it to vibrate. These vibrations are transmitted through three tiny bones in the middle ear (the ossicles) to the cochlea in the inner ear. The cochlea is a fluid-filled, spiral-shaped organ lined with thousands of microscopic hair cells. The traveling wave within the cochlea causes specific hair cells to bend, depending on the frequency of the sound.
